We have all heard Trump parade across stage after stage talking about all of the programs and departments he will cut as president. One of the things Trump plans to slash is the Department of Education, which sounds bad on the surface and sounds even worse when you dig into the numbers.
Trump education plan would put almost 500,000 teachers out of work, according to the Center for American Progress.
From The Hill:
A Center for American Progress (CAP) report issued Friday found that more than 490,000 educators — about 14 percent of all public school teachers — could have their positions eliminated, and students could lose access to $1.3 trillion in loans.
“A Trump presidency would devastate state and district education budgets and exacerbate inequities between the working class and the wealthy elite,” said Will Ragland, campaign director at the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
The Republican nominee has said he will pursue extensive cutbacks at the Education Department.
The plan could affect more than 8 million students around the country.
“Trump’s plan to sacrifice resources for America’s students, particularly the most vulnerable, to pay for tax cuts that would unduly benefit the country’s top earners is as shortsighted as it is callous,” Ragland added.
Here’s the catastrophe Trump will cause…
– 8 million students every year would lose Pell grants
– 490,000 or more teacher positions could be eliminated
– $1.3 trillion in student loans would be at risk
– 750,000 or more students from military families, Native American students, students living in U.S. territories, and students living on federal property or Native American lands would lose $1.1 billion per year for their schools
Perhaps we will hear something from Trump about this during the debates, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Trump NEVER gives specifics about his plans, but at the very least we will get to hear Hillary Clinton destroy him on this topic on live TV.
