This is Polk County, Florida Sheriff Grady Judd (because what else would his name be, really?):
Well, good ol’ Sheriff Grady is finding himself in a lawsuit because of his despicable actions surrounding the devastating Hurricane that just ravaged his entire state.
Judd and his department spent the days leading up to Irma boasting about arresting people so they’d be safe during the storm.
He took to Twitter to drop several messages to those who may have outstanding warrants, saying he would “gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called Polk County Jail”, but he didn’t stop there.
Right, because those with warrants on them don’t deserve to have shelter in the worst hurricane to hit Florida in a century.
Now, Judd is facing a lawsuit for denying shelter to a man who claims Judd made him submit to a background check first:
The sheriff said his stance was to prevent registered sex offenders from entering shelters. But the suit filed by immigrant rights group Nexus Services states Florida driver’s licenses already clearly mark someone as a sex offender. They claim the policy was discriminatory and violates Fourth Amendment rights against unlawful search and seizure.
The suit, which attorney Cynthia Conlin said was electronically filed Sunday but hadn’t yet been processed by the 10th Judicial Circuit Court, claims Andres Borreno of Virginia was told by Polk County deputies he would have to submit to a criminal background check before he was able to enter a shelter Saturday. The suit doesn’t say if Borreno had an outstanding warrant.
“The officer … also never told Borreno that he was suspected of any crime or illegal act at that time,” the suit states. “Criminal suspicion is not raised by trying to enter an emergency shelter to save one’s life and the life of family members.”
This story may not seem to have anything to do with popular vote loser Donald Trump on the surface, but ladies and gentlemen, this is Donald Trump’s America. This is the kind of thing that the President enables with his behavior and words. It’s only going to get worse before it gets better. We need a President who actually understands what “law and order” means, because this isn’t it. This is just cruelty.
