On Friday night, the New York Times released a bombshell of a report, revealing that the FBI had opened a counterintelligence investigation into Donald Trump in May 2017 to determine if he had secretly been working on behalf of Russia against American interest.
The opening two paragraphs of the report are chilling, to say the least. It details the fact that after Trump fired James Comey, law enforcement officials “became so concerned by the president’s behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.”
“The inquiry carried explosive implications. Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security. Agents also sought to determine whether Mr. Trump was knowingly working for Russia or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence.”
Why was this news so huge? Well, simply put: Because it was leaked. You see, typically speaking, all throughout the investigation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller hasn’t allowed things like this to leak to the public unless they were carefully and perfectly timed, and targeted toward a specific individual. In other words, this “leak” is no exception to that rule, as it appears the time is now for the public to know that the feds have had evidence all along suggesting Trump was intimately close with the Russians.
And now that the leak is out there and the seed has been planted, the official report won’t catch anyone by surprise unless, of course, they’ve been living under a rock for the past eighteen months. Surely that won’t be the case, though, because even the most average, non-political person has kept up with enough of the Trump-Russia news to understand the possibility of a scandal and/or has heard of the FBI. The knowledge of those two things alone should allow the majority to deduce that this development is quite significant.
Naturally, Donald Trump would have everyone believe he doesn’t see it that way, as he has since come forward, labeling the New York Times report the “most insulting article” ever.
Trump, of course, hopped on Twitter had this public meltdown:
However, if I were a betting individual, I would dare say that the president is rattled to his core by this news, because that’s usually the case when he jumps to the defensive.
Stay tuned, folks, and get your popcorn ready. This could get really interesting in the coming days and weeks.
