Based on their court filings, it appears Paul Manafort’s lawyers may have messed up in a major way, which could spell disaster for Donald Trump. Although filed under seal, it seems their response inadvertently revealed that their client both shared Trump campaign polling data and held a discussion pertaining to a Ukraine peace plan with Russian spy Konstantin Kilimnik during the election, and then lied to Special Counsel Robert Mueller about it.
Per a report from the Washington Post:
The special counsel alleged Manafort “lied about sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign,” according to the unredacted filing. The source of that data, including whether it came from the Trump campaign, is unclear.
According to the filing, Mueller also accused Manafort of lying about discussing a Ukrainian peace plan with Kilimnik during the 2016 campaign.
“Manafort ‘conceded’ that he discussed or may have discussed a Ukraine peace plan with Mr. Kilimnik on more than one occasion,” his attorneys quote the special counsel as saying, and “ ‘acknowledged’ that he and Mr. Kilimnik met while they were both in Madrid,” without giving a date.
If true, this certainly would explain why Mueller decided to squash Manafort’s plea deal. Regardless, with the border wall and government shutdown conversations at the forefront of everyone’s attention, this news couldn’t have surfaced at a worse time for Donald Trump, because it practically proves that Trump-Russia collusion did in fact exist.
So, how exactly did Robert Mueller discover that Paul Manafort was lying to him about his interactions with a Russian spy? Well, perhaps the answer lies within Rick Gates, Manafort’s longtime sidekick, who we know has already flipped. Or perhaps it was someone else? Regardless, if this information was given up, what else might have been given up?
Unfortunately, we can’t answer those question with certainty at this point, but I suppose only time will tell. And at the going rate, Donald Trump should be concerned about the future of his presidency if he isn’t already.
