Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate Majority Leader, announced that he is canceling the pending recess and will keep the Senate in session. He blamed the Democrats for obstructing progress as his reasoning, then Donald Trump had to jump on Twitter to “celebrate” yet another disaster under his administration.
“The August recess has been canceled. Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees,” McConnell said.
Mitch McConnell realizes the Republican Party is in danger with November quickly approaching. He’s scrambling to come up with a plan.
There could be a few reasons McConnell has decided to cancel the recess:
1. The most obvious reason would be that he wants to confirm additional judges as quickly as he can.
2. He’s also trying to prevent the Senate Dems who are up for reelection from being able to campaign back home, particularly for senators like Jon Tester of Montana, who have lengthy trips back to their home states. However, McConnell is also hurting the Republicans who are in the same position in the upcoming elections.
McConnell has clearly taken a long hard look at the state of the Republican party. He knows they are most likely going to lose control of the Senate in November based on the current trajectory of the blue wave that’s gaining more momentum with each passing day.
McConnell is clearly panicked and scrambling to gain some traction and limit the damage the democrats can do to his party.
Trump is the last person who should be celebrating this move, but he’s a guy who doesn’t understand how this game is played. He’s losing and he’s bringing down the entire Republican party in the process. Trump should be more concerned that ever that his key leaders are realizing the future they are headed toward. Trump can’t escape the inevitable and even McConnell knows it.
