According to the paperwork Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been filing for Friday’s arraignment of Paul Manafort, it appears we now have clues as to who else he’s targeting in the Trump-Russia scandal. And the biggest clue of all points to Manafort’s alleged collusion with a Chairman of a Congressional Committee.
Per the latest filing, when Paul Manafort was still working for Kremlin puppet Viktor Yanukovich in Ukraine, he apparently tried to influence “every member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and House Foreign Affairs Committee.” The filing also goes on to assert that “the Chairman of [a Congressional Committee]” was coordinating with the Hapsburg group on Ukraine, a group Mueller is investigating for its role in the Trump-Russia scandal.
Who is this committee Chairman in question, and why is the committee redacted in the filing? Well, we don’t know just yet, but logically through process of elimination, we can safely say it’s neither the Senate Foreign Relations Committee nor the House Foreign Affairs Committee, considering both were mentioned without redaction. So, where does this leave us?
Well, based on the fact Paul Manafort has spent decades working closely with the Republican Party and has been accused of lobbying members of Congress in both parties, one must assume the Chairman he was colluding with is a Republican. Additionally, since Yanukovich was ousted from power in February of 2014, back when the Senate was still under Democratic Party control, one can rule the Senate Chair positions out as they would have been held by Democrats. More than likely, this means the committee in question had to have been in the House, which was controlled by the Republicans at the time.
Unfortunately for now, that’s about as far as things can be narrowed down: A Republican who was the Chairman of a House committee in early 2014, which doesn’t look like it’s the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Robert Mueller refrained from identifying the individual and chose to redact the committee name for some reason, which implies that the Chairman is either under criminal investigation, or has already cut some kind of deal. At the going rate, it will only be a short matter of time before we know who and why.
