The Democratic Party officially has control of the House of Representatives. That means Nancy Pelosi is now officially the Speaker of the House, and she is hitting the ground running, that’s for sure. One of the main concern on everyone’s mind is what she is going to so to reign in Donald Trump, and Pelosi isn’t holding back when it comes to her opinions on the president.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is still a few weeks away from delivering his final report from his investigation, so the House Democrats aren’t jumping to the impeachment process just yet, although a few Democratic leaders are urging Congress to introduce articles of impeachment.
Nancy Pelosi had some comments on the Today Show this week where she laid out her opinion on how things may play out if we get to seriously pursuing impeachment of the president.
Pelosi was asked whether or not she thought the Department of Justice memo that recommended a sitting President not be indicted was correct. She stated strongly that she doesn’t believe that’s accurate and she’s open to the possibility of Trump being indicted while still in office.
“I do not think that that is conclusive,” Pelosi said about the guidance. “I think that that is an open discussion. I think that is an open discussion in terms of the law,” she said”
Speaking about impeachment, Pelosi said:
“We have to wait and see what happens with the Mueller report. We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason. So we’ll just have to see how it comes”.
Clearly, the shortest and most direct way to oust Trump is through criminal justice maneuvers that leave him no option other than resignation. Impeachment would take months just to pass through the House, let alone the Senate. Indicting Trump would be much more effective and would be far more likely to be successful. Pelosi is clearly ready to take that path if needed and it appears she would prefer it happen sooner rather than later.
