Nunes Memo Backfires: Recorded Surveillance Now Handed to Robert Mueller

Popular vote loser Donald Trump keeps playing his chips on the Devin Nunes memo, believing it somehow vindicates and exonerates him in the whole FBI/Mueller/Russia investigation. It doesn’t, of course. In fact, it keeps doing the opposite, proving Trump and his associates time and time again to be guilty of the things they’re being investigated for.

The Nunes memo has blown up in Trump’s face from multiple angles, one of which has gone almost completely unnoticed by the public. Specifically, the memo unwittingly exposed one of Trump’s key former advisers Steve Bannon to criminal culpability, which is very bad news for Trump considering Bannon is talking to Mueller.

Carter Page was a Trump campaign adviser who met with Congress months ago and told them that he made a phone call to Steve Bannon during the transition period and told him about his connections to the Russians.

Trump and Nunes knew this information already, yet they went ahead and released a memo that focused on the FBI’s FISA surveillance warrant on Carter Page. That move has now backfired, as we are now learning that Carter Page’s phone was tapped during the time he made that call to Steve Bannon.

Politico points out: The FBI was monitoring Carter Page when the former Trump campaign adviser says he spoke with Trump adviser Steve Bannon about Russia in January 2017, raising the strong possibility that the FBI intercepted a conversation between the two men.

Page told Congress in November about the call. But it has been cast into a new light by last week’s release of a Republican memo revealing that the FBI was monitoring Page’s communications at the time.

The significance of a possible FBI recording depends on the exact content of the conversation between Bannon and Page, about which Page has been vague. But it means the FBI’s surveillance of Page — which has been the subject of intense partisan anger in Washington — may have touched one of the highest-ranking figures in Trump’s incoming administration just days before inauguration.

Why this is significant to Robert Mueller’s investigation…

Special Counsel Robert Mueller almost certainly already knew everything the wiretap picked up even before this news broke, but Steve Bannon now knows for certain he’s been picked up on the wiretap. If there was anything illegal discussed, Bannon now knows he’s been caught and will be flipping for Mueller immediately to save his own skin.

The only way Trump could bungle this memo and investigation more on his part would be if he stupidly goes through with the face-to-face interview with Robert Mueller.  Trump’s lawyers, and most of the world, know that he will absolutely perjure himself within seconds of speaking with Mueller, but Trump thinks he’s some kind of legal (and stable) genius that can outsmart Mueller.
