Republicans seem to be having a competition to see who among them can say the dumbest, most insensitive, offensive thing every day. Guess what? They’re all winning. But on Wednesday, Rep. Steve King (R. Iowa) took the grand prize.
After the House Appropriations Committee presented a spending bill of around $14 Billion, of which $1.6 Billion is allocated to begin building a wall along the U.S./Mexico border, King suggested that $1.6 Billion should come from funds cut from Planned Parenthood and federal welfare programs.
That’s right, we can’t find money to provide for people’s most basic needs, but we can find money to build Trump’s moronic wall.
“I would find half of a billion dollars of that right out of Planned Parenthood’s budget,” King told the Examiner. “And the rest of it could come out of food stamps and the entitlements that are being spread out for people that haven’t worked in three generations.”
“We’ve got to put America back to work, this administration will do it,” King added, possibly actually believing the bullshit coming out of his mouth.
A representative for Planned Parenthood said their organization “receives federal funding the same way as every other hospital or community health care provider: through Medicaid reimbursements.” She also suggested that King’s comments make no sense:
“For Rep. Steve King to propose using Medicaid reimbursements to pay for a border wall is nonsensical and cruel. Blocking individuals on Medicaid from going to Planned Parenthood for preventive care will result in people losing access to care.”
King also suggested that cuts to welfare programs like EBT for groceries should be considered to make budget room for the border wall.
This isn’t fantasy, ladies and gentlemen, this is real life. This is America, 2017, as controlled by Donald Trump and the Republican party.
