Perhaps no President in our nation’s history has been more unfairly maligned and demonized than Barack Obama.
Did he make nothing but great decisions? No. Was he perfect? Of course not. But he did lead the United States with a class, dignity, competence and intelligence that we’re all going to miss come January 20, whether we admit it or not.
But to have heard the way Republicans have talked about him since the moment he was elected, you’d think he was an evil, incompetent bozo, instead of the decent man and hard working President he has been.
The writers over at Thinkprogress.org have put together a sampling of all the horrible things conservatives were absolutely positive would happen under Obama’s presidency that were simply just not true. Here are the four the author chose to highlight:
Gas would cost $6.00-10.00 a gallon
Republican Senator Mike Lee said from the senate floor that gas would hit over $6 a gallon if Obama were reelected, claiming prices would rise a nickel for every month he was in office. Newt Gingrich, then running for president, echoed this, but upped the ante, with his absurd claim that Obama would cause gas prices to hit $10 a gallon. These claims were blatant and utter lies.
Unemployment would be stuck at over 8%
In 2012, while running against Obama for President, Mitt Romney predicted that if Obama were to be reelected “you’re going to see chronic high unemployment continue four years or longer.” The unemployment rate was 8.1% at that time and had been over 8% the whole year. Romney pledged that, if elected, he could bring the unemployment rate down to 6% by January 2017.
Ironically, under Obama, the unemployment rate currently stands at 4.6% and has been under 6% since September 2014. Over 10 million new jobs have been created since January of 2013. Again, nothing but lies from the GOP.
The Stock Market will crash
Many republicans tossed this little untruthful grenade at Obama, ironically including a tweet from this guy:
The short and sweet answer to this one is that it just didn’t happen. In fact, the Dow is up 46% since Obama has been in office. Lies, lies and more lies.
The entire economy would collapse
Though many politicians on the right did predict this, the loudest yelling of this claim came from blowhard radio host Rush Limbaugh, who said ““the country’s economy is going to collapse if Obama is re-elected.”
Limbaugh was confident in his prediction: “There’s no if about this. And it’s gonna be ugly. It’s gonna be gut wrenching, but it will happen.”Rush went on to say “I know mathematics, and I know economics. I know history. I know socialism, statism, Marxism, I know where it goes. I know what happens at the end of it.”
This would take “a year and a half, two years, three years,” according to Limbaugh. In the almost 4 years since he said it, the economy has not only not collapsed, it’s grown.
Hey, a conservative lied about the consequences of electing Obama! Go figure.
