Back in April, when popular vote loser Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, who was at the time in the midst of an investigation into Trump’s ties to Russian hacking of the 2016 election, many immediately started throwing around the term “obstruction of justice” as the the crime that could bring Trump’s presidency to an end.
Now, 6 months later, the case for Trump’s obstruction is back in the news, as reports indicate that he did commit that crime with Comey’s firing:
Norm Eisen, Barry Berke and Noah Bookbinder are the authors of a detailed paper – published by the Brookings Institute – where they make an extremely strong case that Trump did in fact fire James Comey to interfere with the investigation into Russia’s interference with the 2016 presidential election.
The authors note that Trump’s own public statements just might give Mueller’s prosecutors everything they need to prove Trump had a corrupt intention when firing Comey.
“President Trump’s behavior is certainly suggestive of corrupt intent with respect to the Russia and Flynn investigations,” they note. “For example, President Trump has articulated multiple, shifting rationales for Comey’s firing. The first explanation for terminating Comey, as articulated by the president in a May 10 tweet and in the Rosenstein memo, was that Comey had mishandled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email, and had lost the confidence of his subordinates. Soon thereafter, President Trump reversed course and said… that the Russia investigation was on his mind when he made the decision to fire Comey.”
The report also points out Trump’s demands of loyalty from Comey and his request to drop the FBI’s investigation into former NSA Adviser Michael Flynn as motivations for firing Comey, which would amount to obstruction of justice.
The points out that having mixed motives for making a decision does not preclude someone from having a corrupt intention.
OK, Mr. Mueller, and everyone in Congress – get your act together and make it happen. Let’s end this national nightmare that is the Trump administration.
