Oh, the irony.
Trump Winery, located in Virgina and run by his son Eric Trump, has filed a request with the U.S. Department of Labor saying that it needs to hire 6 foreign workers to fill jobs as farmers and laborers. These 6 workers would work 6 days a week for $10.72 an hour from January 31-June 30.
What’s the problem with this, you might ask?
The move comes even though Trump has repeatedly claimed on the campaign trail that we need to “hire American” and stop giving jobs to foreigners. It completely goes against one of his biggest campaign promises.
And – even more striking – is the vast amount of jobs over the years that Trump has said he needed to fill with foreign workers because Americans simply wouldn’t work them (over 1,256 according to a CNN analysis of Labor Department filings).
For those that don’t know – the Department of Labor requires employers to show proof that they tried to hire U.S. workers before putting in the special requests.
“You cannot get help during the season. The season goes from like October to March. It’s almost impossible to get help,” Trump said.”And part of the reason you can’t get American people is they want full time jobs.”
There’s more, though. If, indeed, it’s true that Trump can’t fill the jobs with American workers, why then did Trump vow on the campaign trail to not allow visa holders to replace US workers? He even said that one of the five executive actions he takes on his very first day in office is to ask the Department of Labor to investigate “all abuses of the visa programs that undercut the American worker.”
To be clear, there is nothing illegal or even shady about what Trump Winery is doing, but it goes very clearly against the message of “America first” that was one of Trump’s biggest campaign platforms.
Trump being a hypocrite? Color me shocked.
