Donald Trump continually insists that he has no conflict of interest because he turned his businesses over to his children. This is, of course, ridiculous, as the Office of Government Ethics and other experts have continually told him he needs to fully divest from his brand.
Trump’s team has argued that putting the sons in charge of the business, while allowing Trump to still own them, sets up a firewall between Trump and the business operations. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, however, may have accidentally shattered that firewall.
Donald Jr. recently told the AP that that he “has spoken to him (his father) more in the last few weeks,” and Eric told Forbes “My father and I are very close. I talk to him a lot. We’re pretty inseparable.” According to Forbes, Eric Trump’s admission that he’d give his father business reports happened less than two minutes after he said that they never discussed the government or the business.
So, I imagine the interview going something like this:
Forbes, at 2:45: Do you ever discuss business or the government with your father?
Eric Trump, at 2:45: No. I never discuss business or the government with my father?
Then some other things are said…then…
Eric Trump, at 2:47: I give my father regular updates on the business.
Eric Trump told Forbes,
“There is kind of a clear separation of church and state that we maintain, and I am deadly serious about that exercise,” he says, echoing previous statements from his father. “I do not talk about the government with him, and he does not talk about the business with us. That’s kind of a steadfast pact we made, and it’s something that we honor.”
Oh, Really, Eric??
TWO MINUTES later you admitted you do! That seems like an awfully short amount of time to forget that you said something exactly opposite of what you’re currently saying.
