William Barr, President Trump’s nominee to head up the Department of Justice, made many dubious statements during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, but few were as alarming as what he said about journalists.
During the confirmation hearing, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) asked Barr about his view on protections for a free press.
“I can conceive of situations where as a last resort and a news organization has run through a red flag or something like that, knows that they’re putting out stuff that will hurt the country,” Barr said, “there might be a situation where someone would be held in contempt.”
Yes, Mr. Barr, there indeed might be a situation where that could happen – it’s called a dictatorship.
