President Donald Trump has made a library worth of Tweets about the Russia probe, claiming that the investigations are illegal and corrupt. It’s his favorite way of trying to excuse himself from any wrongdoing that may be found when the investigation is over. The arguments from Trump and his most ardent enablers is that the FBI lied to federal judges on the FISA court when pursuing the warrant to probe Trump’s campaign.
Trump has reiterated this claim on Twitter himself, tweeting that “the Trump Campaign for President was illegally being spied upon” for “the political gain of Crooked Hillary Clinton and the DNC,” and that “the DOJ, FBI and Obama Gang need to be held to account” because they “Misled the Court to provide a pretext to SPY on the Trump Team.”
He even recklessly moved to declassify documents surrounding the surveillance of his former campaign aide Carter Page, in an attempt to try and justify the claims of misconduct.
Well, Trump is wrong. So wrong, in fact, that lawyers with the Department of Justice had to say in a court filing to the D.C. District Court for a Freedom of Information Act case, that Trump doesn’t know what he’s talking about when it comes to FISA classification
Trump, Devin Nunes and Sean Hannity continue to espouse this thoroughly debunked notion. But they are unequivocally and completely without question wrong. And not just wrong, but knowingly lying about it.
