The Donald Trump administration isn’t exactly known for keeping their stories straight, and that was on full display Monday when Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security debunked the White House’s claims of large numbers of suspected terrorists coming across the Mexico/US border.
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed the number was 4,000 terror suspects that have been stopped at the border. The actual is slightly less (sarcasm intended)…the real number is 6. Yes, SIX.
But in fact, the figure she is citing is based on 2017 data, not 2018, and refers to stops made by DHS across the globe, mainly at airports.
NBC News reports that only six immigrants in the terrorism database where stopped by authorities along the border during the first half of last year.
Kirstjen Nielsen, Secretary of Homeland Security, says the exact number is classified.
Manu Raju, CNN senior Congressional reporter, points out a report DHC issued in September that states, “At year’s end there was no credible evidence indicating that international terrorist groups have established bases in Mexico, worked with Mexican drug cartels, or sent operatives via Mexico into the United States.”
