In the last several weeks, Americans (the ones with souls, anyway) have been horrified that our government is suddenly in the practice of ripping infant children from their parents arms, separating them (possibly forever) and in some cases, completely losing track of the children.
We’re better than this, America. The UN thinks so too, and on Tuesday, issued a stern demand of Trump.
The United Nations human rights office has issued a statement demanding the United States “immediately halt” the policy of separating children from their families when they cross the border without proper immigration documentation.
A spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, said there is “nothing normal about detaining children,” and charged that “border control appears to take precedence over child protection and care in the U.S.,” according to the Associated Press.
“The use of immigration detention and family separation as a deterrent runs counter to human rights standards and principles,”Shamdasani brilliantly said during a press briefing in Geneva, Switzerland. “The child’s best interest should always come first.”
Trump, of course, blames previous administration for what he calls “a law.” But that, also of course, is a blatant, flat-out lie. Under the previous administration, immigrants seeking asylum would be allowed to remain with their children. This is all Trump, all the time, and no matter how much he blames Democrats, this is his policy and he’s going to own it one way or another in the end.
Fact is, Under the Obama policy, if a person asked for asylum and could show that returning home would be dangerous for them, they would then be allowed to stay in U.S. until there was a hearing on their case.
Trump loves to blame everyone but his own administration for instituting the policy of separating parents from children. However, it is his policy that has created this humanitarian crisis.
